It Takes A Village

Mansa Mentoring Inc., was founded by Patrick Chatman who served as a teacher and administrator for 34 years in the Milwaukee Public School System.  Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is an urban school district and the largest in the state of Wisconsin.  Mr. Chatman began his career as a special education teacher in a classroom with African-American boys that were identified as being "at risk" and having behavior problems in school.  The school that he taught at was located in a zip code  (53206) that was identified as having the highest incarceration rate of African-American males in the United States.

Despite these challenges, many of his students' behavior and academics improved because of the personalized attention that was given to them.  Mr. Chatman continued to use the same strategies for student achievement when he became principal of O.W. Holmes School.  Under his leadership, O.W. Holmes became one of 21 schools to become recognized statewide as a "School of Distinction" in the areas of reading, math, and positive behavior interventions by the Wisconsin Department of Instruction.

After his retirement from MPS, Mr. Chatman decided to use his network with business organizations and professionals to continue the work of improving the lives of African-American male youth.  He truly recognizes that it takes a village of committed individuals to get this accomplished!
